A Slovak man suspected of blowing up several cash machines in his home country has been arrested in Budapest, the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) said on Wednesday via police.hu.
Slovak national arrested in Budapest
According to the statement, the man allegedly detonated and looted multiple ATMs across Slovakia in May 2026 before travelling by car to Hungary, where he went into hiding at a property in Budapest’s 9th district, the Hungarian news agency wrote.
Following an analysis of intelligence received from Slovak and Czech authorities, BRFK detectives, working alongside officers from Hungary’s National Protective Service, identified the suspect’s whereabouts in a joint operation. Slovak authorities had already issued a European arrest warrant for the man.
As a result of the investigation, and with the support of Hungary’s Counter-Terrorism Centre, the 28-year-old Slovak national — a repeat offender previously convicted of armed robbery and other serious crimes — was apprehended on June 12 in the underground garage of a residential building in Ferencváros.
Mask, head torch, stolen number plates, bulletproof vest seized
During the raid on his flat, officers seized evidence linked to the alleged offences, including a mask, head torch, stolen number plates, a bulletproof vest, gloves, and a rubber-bullet firearm. Devices suitable for triggering explosives — such as a timing mechanism, radio-controlled detonators and initiating charges — were also recovered.
The BRFK has launched criminal proceedings against the suspect on suspicion of misuse of explosives or explosive devices, and he has been taken into custody in accordance with the European arrest warrant.
As no bomb-related offences were committed in Hungary, authorities are currently in discussions with their foreign counterparts regarding his extradition, the statement added.
