Staggering: Hungarian teen livestreamed his own suicide, many watched but nobody helped

Police have now identified several individuals who watched the shocking crime in which an 18-year-old Hungarian teen committed suicide, yet no one called for help. Was it apathy, misunderstanding, or something more intentional? That’s what Hungarian investigators are trying to uncover.

An 18-year-old boy chose to end his life and broadcast the act live in a chat room, Blikk reports. The incident was first reported by the State Secretariat for Law Enforcement, which highlighted the disturbing fact that no one acted—no assistance was offered, not even a call to emergency services.

There have been cases where such intervention saved a life. Previously, a mother at home with her newborn saw a video on social media of an old acquaintance who, heartbroken, attempted suicide by ingesting rat poison. Although she only had his name, police managed to identify the man in time and intervene.

But in this case, there was no such outcome. For unknown reasons, nobody in the chat room responded to József’s suicide attempt, which tragically succeeded. The Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) said an investigation has been launched against an unknown perpetrator. Blikk has confirmed the victim was a foreign national with no permanent Hungarian address.
