If you own an Apple device, be it an iPhone or Mac, then you are most likely already familiar with iCloud. It is Apple’s own proprietary cloud storage service. And it allows all Apple users to easily back up and remotely store their files and data across all their devices. Beyond juts storage, they are a convenient means to access data across multiple Apple devices anytime and anywhere. For instance, if you want to make a presentation at the office, you don’t need to carry an external disk drive everywhere. As long as you have internet access, you can either use your iPhone or simply plug your laptop to an external monitor using a dual hdmi adapter!
And while the list of benefits of using this service is endless, there may come a time when you are confronted with an error message that tells you that your storage space is full. If this has happened or is happening to your right now, then keep on reading, because we are going to explain why you keep seeing this error message. And also how you can clear more space on your account to accommodate more files.
However, before we do that keep in mind that you can always still use an external storage drive or SD Card to store your files. It may not be as convenient of a method as cloud storage, but it is still portable and works quite well. In which case, you will need to utilize a usb c sd card reader. It is a rather affordable and small hub that can be connected directly to your Mac, without using a cord. It features a powerful USB 3.0 port that can transfer data at a rate of 5Gbps. Plus, it also comes with two SD card ports that can transfer data at about 200Mbps. This makes it a very convenient and portable choice that should serve all your basic file transfer needs, especially if you tend to work remotely.
How To Create More Space
You can easily check to see the limits of your iCloud account, pretty easily. And if you own a Mac you can head to System Preferences > Apple ID. From there, you should be able to check and see how much space is left in your account. And also analyze what exactly is consuming the most storage space. Now, while the free plan usually comes with about 5GB worth of storage, but you can always upgrade your iCloud account to a higher plan for more storage, but it will cost you extra.
In terms of pricing, you can choose to either go up to 50GB = $0.99 per month, 200GB = $2.99 per month and 2TB = $9.99 per month. If you decide to upgrade to a higher plan, then head to the Apple ID > iCloud section on your Mac. From there, you can subscribe to a new plan.
However, if you prefer to keep using the plan you have now, then read on to view the different ways to free up space.
How to free up extra space
Considering how this storage service is built into every Apple device, it is a very convenient feature for many users. But, it can be annoying when that space keeps getting filled up unnecessarily. And as we mentioned, you can always upgrade your storage plan, but if you’d rather not do that, then there are a few quick things you can do to help free up more space.
- Delete duplicates
More often than not, one of the biggest consumers of storage space is the existence of multiple duplicate files. However, going through each file one by one can often be an extremely arduous process. In such cases you always use the Gemini 2 app. This will scan your Mac’s hard drive or iCloud account and pinpoint which files are original and which ones are duplicates.
- Remove old backups
It is pretty common for people to forget to delete old iPhone or Mac backups, but they are actually one of the biggest consumers of memory. However, not everyone is willing to erase those backups because they may want to keep them in the event of an emergency system crash.
In which case, you can always move this data to another device instead of completely erasing them. In such instances, you can always connect your laptop to another Mac. Or, connect to an external storage device using docking stations. These accessories will do well to expand your connectivity ports and allow you to shift all the duplicate files somewhere else, instead of consuming your iCloud memory.
- Delete old iMessage texts
If you didn’t know already iMessage conversations can consume a lot of unnecessary space, especially if there are several videos, photos, or audio files that you have been sending. This is why it is always best to delete old conversations that you don’t need anymore to help clear space.
