Gergely Boros, a former world and European champion kayaker and ex-professional director of the Hungarian Canoe Federation, has died in tragic circumstances at the age of 42. News of the sportsman’s death sent shockwaves through Hungary’s canoeing community.

Boros’s death was announced by the Hungarian Canoe Federation, although its statement did not disclose what had led to the tragedy. It later emerged that the 42-year-old had been killed in an industrial accident in Paks. The incident took place near Vácika Street, close to the tennis courts of Paks SE, Blikk wrote.

Police were already at the scene on Wednesday evening after a local news agency reported that a 42-year-old man from Paks had died in what was believed to have been a workplace accident. The authorities said they would provide further details at a later stage.

Further information emerged on Thursday morning, when police confirmed that proceedings had been opened over the death at the construction site on Vácika Street. The investigation is examining suspicions of negligent endangerment in the course of an occupation resulting in death.

He was building a padel court

The tragedy occurred during the construction of a padel court. According to information obtained by Index, a large glass wall fell on Boros.

Boros was born in Paks and began kayaking with ASE before going on to become one of the most influential figures in Hungarian canoeing. He served as the federation’s professional director from 2018 to 2024. His former club remembered him as a cheerful, energetic, dependable and highly motivated man.
