A Hungarian father-of-three was brutally killed after confronting revellers outside his Toronto home when his children were unable to sleep, in a case described as shockingly savage — and all the more disturbing for who was involved.
The gruesome killing risks casting a shadow over Toronto’s Hungarian community, as it has emerged that not only the victim but also the alleged attackers were Hungarian. Two suspects have already been arrested, while a Romanian woman remains at large. There appears to be no rational explanation for the violence: the victim was left with no intact bones, his body repeatedly run over by a car after his head had been smashed. Reports suggest drugs may have played a role in the senseless brutality.
Three attackers set upon him
What began as a commonplace neighbourhood dispute — one not unfamiliar even in Budapest — rapidly escalated into scenes akin to a horror film in Canada, ending in tragedy.
Two young Hungarian men have been identified as suspects in the killing of the 32-year-old father, whose death under brutal circumstances has deeply shocked Toronto’s Hungarian community. According to local accounts, the ferocity of the attack was such that even seasoned investigators were shaken.
The victim, identified as S. E., had lived in Canada for more than a decade and had obtained citizenship. He resided with his family in North York, described as a quiet and orderly neighbourhood of houses, flats and restaurants, Blikk, a Hungarian tabloid wrote.
According to reports, the incident began in the early hours when his children were unable to sleep due to loud music outside. The father went out to ask those responsible to lower the volume. A verbal altercation followed, quickly spiralling out of control.
Witnesses say several individuals attacked him, beating him before striking him with a vehicle. The driver did not stop after the initial impact; instead, the car was reportedly driven over the victim multiple times as he lay on the ground. His injuries were so severe that he died at the scene. Locals described the extent of the damage as comparable to a fall from a twenty-storey building, with no chance of survival.

Fears of a targeted killing
Toronto police initially treated the case as a targeted attack. Early in the investigation, several possible motives were considered, including personal or business disputes, though authorities did not disclose further details.
Some experts suggested the level of brutality pointed to a calculated act of retribution rather than mere rage or intoxication. Others, however, maintained that drugs alone could not fully explain the violence. In the immediate aftermath, the victim’s family sought police protection, fearing retaliation from suspects still at large. For many, the killing appeared to carry the hallmarks of a message.

The investigation took a rapid turn within a day, with two Hungarian men — aged 18 and 23 — arrested in a police operation on suspicion of murder, Blikk wrote in a separate article. A Romanian woman believed to have been involved remains on the run. Proceedings for homicide have been initiated against the suspects.

Community in shock
The killing has deeply shaken the local Hungarian community. Balázs Zanati, a Hungarian-born police officer serving in Toronto and responsible for the safety of tens of thousands of residents, had initially suspected that Hungarians might be involved, though he had hoped this would not prove to be the case given the reputational damage it could cause. The victim leaves behind three children. Those who knew him say he had no prior dealings with the law.
Police continue to investigate the full circumstances and motive behind the killing. One detail, however, appears increasingly certain from multiple reports: the perpetrators were under the influence of drugs.
