Hungarian police have appealed to the public for assistance in tracing 45-year-old British businessman John Robert Joseph Tovell, whose whereabouts remain unknown after he left a nightclub in the early hours of the morning in the Erzsébetváros district.

Businessman disappears after night out

According to available information, Tovell was last seen in central Budapest in the early hours of 16 June 2026. He had been at a venue in the city’s VII district before leaving at around 2 AM for an unknown destination. Since then, neither family members nor acquaintances have been able to contact him.

Budapest’s Metropolitan Police, specifically the 8th District station, has launched a missing persons investigation and officers are continuing to search for the British national with considerable resources.

Tovell is described as approximately 190cm tall, with short greying hair and a beard. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing black trousers, a black T-shirt and a dark green long-sleeved shirt. Police have released an image of him.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about his whereabouts or the circumstances of his disappearance to come forward. Reports can be made via Hungary’s anonymous tip line or the 112 emergency number.

A well-travelled and affluent figure

Hungarian tabloid Blikk reports that Tovell is a keen traveller who devotes much of his free time to visiting new destinations and attending concerts. His company, Cardinal Rock, is described as one of the most exclusive independent property investment firms operating in London and other major British cities, specialising in helping clients build and expand property portfolios.

The businessman had arrived in Budapest five days before he went missing. His mobile phone has since been switched off and cannot be traced, and there has been no activity on his bank cards.

Investigators are expected to analyse extensive CCTV coverage in both the VII and VIII districts in an effort to reconstruct his movements. László Molnár, a retired police officer who previously specialised in missing persons cases, told the paper that there are known criminal groups targeting affluent foreign visitors in the city, meaning no line of inquiry can be ruled out.

Echoes of a previous case

The case bears similarities to the disappearance of American woman Mackenzie Michalski, who went missing in Budapest on 5 November 2024. Her case drew the attention of members of the US Congress.

Hungarian authorities later established that an Irish national had taken her to his flat, where she is believed to have been strangled during a sexual encounter before he attempted to dispose of the body. The suspect remains in pre-trial detention; prosecutors have sought a 12-year prison sentence.
