Hungarian flag seized at Israeli protest after being “mistaken” for Palestinian symbol

Israeli police seized a Hungarian flag during a protest against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after officers claimed it looked too similar to the Palestinian flag.
The demonstration took place last Saturday in northern Israel, where crowds had gathered to voice opposition to the government. Among them was a protester waving Hungary’s red-white-green tricolour, reportedly to mark the political downfall of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, widely seen as an ally of Netanyahu.
Police intervention despite explanation
According to 444.hu, police approached the man and confiscated the flag on the grounds that it could be mistaken for a Palestinian symbol. While the Palestinian flag is not officially banned in Israel, authorities often restrict its display at demonstrations due to concerns over “potential provocation”.
The protester reportedly attempted to clarify that the flag was Hungarian, not Palestinian. However, officers argued that others might misinterpret it and react accordingly.
He then offered to return the flag to his car voluntarily, but police refused. The flag was only returned to him after the protest had concluded.
באמת, זה אין לתאר.

Questions raised over intent
The incident has sparked debate, with some observers suggesting the authorities were aware the flag was Hungarian but objected to the political message behind it: namely, celebrating the fall of a leader considered a close ally of Netanyahu.
It’s no wonder that even Israelis are protesting against the government. According to Gaza’s government media office, Israel has committed at least 2,400 violations of the ceasefire agreement reached last October, including killings, arrests, siege, and starvation.
As of Friday, 24 April, Israel has killed 972 Palestinians and injured 2,235 others in violations of the truce, according to the Health Ministry.
In its two-year war in Gaza, Israel killed over 72,000 Palestinians, wounded 172,000 others, and caused massive destruction affecting 90% of civilian infrastructure.
