Hungarian man on the run after murdering ex-girlfriend in Austria: She asked for protection but got none
A Europe-wide manhunt is underway for a Hungarian man accused of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend in the head in a supermarket parking lot in Austria. The shocking incident has left the local community of Maria Alm in mourning, and residents are fearful that the suspect may return.
Hungarian Krisztián Papp murders ex-girlfriend
According to Hungarian tabloid Blikk, the victim, 34-year-old Jennifer Z., a German-born wine expert working at a local hotel, was killed around midnight on Saturday, 3 May. According to reports, she met with her former partner, 32-year-old Krisztián Papp, who was supposed to return her apartment key. During the encounter, an argument broke out. Papp drew a firearm and shot her at close range before fleeing in a rented vehicle. (Read our first report on the incident HERE.)
The tragedy unfolded in front of one of Jennifer’s friends, who had accompanied her for safety and witnessed the killing from a car mirror. Authorities have since launched an extensive search operation involving all patrol units, Austria’s elite Cobra task force, and rapid response teams. A European arrest warrant has been issued for Papp.
The woman asked for protection before – but got none
New details have emerged suggesting the murder could have been prevented. Prosecutors confirmed that Jennifer had previously filed a police report against Papp for threats and property damage. However, no restraining order was issued, as the suspect had no prior criminal record. Police spokesman Hans Wolfgruber explained that this limited their legal options.
The two had reportedly met years earlier while working in the same hotel in Unken, a town just 30 minutes from the crime scene. Papp, originally from Veszprém, Hungary, was known among acquaintances for his aggressive and unpredictable behaviour. He was also an extreme supporter of the local handball team.
Blikk reported that Papp had attempted suicide a few months ago after a previous breakup. His mother allegedly reached out to friends, desperate to locate him after the incident.
As tributes in the form of candles and flowers continue to grow in Maria Alm, Jennifer’s family and friends are left grieving—while authorities race to find her killer.
