Hungarian photographer receives prestigious European award for unique perspective Roma PHOTOS – VIDEO

Photographer Tamás Markos’s work As if they were smiling, showing the everyday life of a Roma family, was awarded the Council of Europe Journalism Excellence Award.
This year, the second Journalism Excellence Awards “honour and promote media contributions that avoid stigma faced by Roma and Travellers – and impartially capture their human stories”, the CoE statement said.

Markos’s multimedia project based on photographs documents the everyday life and the agricultural entrepreneurship of a Roma family.

Other recipients this year included Vasileios Katsaras of Greece for investigative journalism and Simona Janikova of Czechia for best interview. Slovak journalist Spera Ferlin received the Young Journalist Award and Mykola Homanyuk received a Special Jury Award for documenting stories of Ukrainian Roma, the CoE said.
