Travelo.hu writes that the Hungarian VarroDesign won the award for Best Lobby at Gold Key Awards, which is frequently referred to as the Academy Awards of hotel and restaurant designers, for the performance of their design in Science Hotel Szeged.
This was the 36th time that the award show was organised in Waldorf Astoria, where winners were chosen in 21 categories out of 506 contestants this year. The Hungarian VarroDesign was one of the contestants who made it into the final with more than one work. The design team entered the finals with the designing made in Science Hotel Szeged and Onyx Restaurant, out of which the hotel’s design was acknowledged at the gala.
The world’s best designers competed at Gold Key Awards with masterpieces that they designed for W Hotels, Hilton, MGM, Sheraton or Shangri-La. Usually, only the most significant cities of hotel designing make into the final: New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, London, Amsterdam, Toronto, Hong Kong, and Beijing etc. After a list like this, it is quite surprising that the success of a hotel from Szeged stunned everyone, as most people didn’t even know that this city even existed.

The Science Hotel Szeged won the award for Best Lobby in the budget/focused service category, thus passing fellow competitors like MOXY Phoenix, the work of Ankrom Moisan in Portland, Shinjuku Prince Hotel designed by the Hong Kong CL3 Architects Ltd. and Generator Amsterdam designed by the Toronto DesignAgency.
The judges emphasized that they looked at the hotels as a whole, not only the lobby defined by the category. The main aspect was the smashing uniqueness of the plan and its total harmony with the concept, in point of which the Hungarian work stood out from the others.
