Hungarian Water Polo League: The new season kick-off with cup action
The moment Hungarian water polo fans have been looking forward to for weeks finally arrived this weekend! After a 4 month summer break the start of the 2014/2015 season is here and one of the most anticipated leagues in the world of water polo kicked off., Kevin Vernooij (boxscorenews.com) reports.
Transfers over the summer, primarily involving Szolnok, OSC, and Eger, made the Hungarian water polo scene lick its lips while eagerly waiting for October. Can Hungary finally play a role of importance again on the international club stage? Can the Varga brothers inspire Szolnok to their first championship victory in over 40 years, or will the newly build super squad of Eger go for a hattrick? Can OSC meet the expectations after huge investments over the summer? And what about the return of UVSE (Újpest) to the highest stage! Can they compete with the likes of BVSC, Honvéd, and FTC? All these questions will be answered in the next 8 months!
This weekend the preliminary group stage matched of the Theodora Hungarian Cup where to be played in 4 different host cities across the country. In 4 groups of 4 teams, 16 clubs were hoping to kick start their season with a bang. Group 1, played in Pécs, had Vasas, Szeged, YBL, and host PVSK battle for the top 2 spots. In group 2, hosted in Debrecen, Eger and OSC fought for points and prestige. Group 3 had 3 Budapest based competitors in the likes of BVSC, Honvéd, and KSI. Hosts MVLC (Miskolc) compete in the second division and entered the competition under a wildcard.
