Hungarians in Britain have no reason to fret over Brexit, says UK envoy
Budapest, June 29 (MTI) – Hungarian citizens working in the UK have no reason to be worried about Britain’s decision to leave the European Union, the British ambassador said on Wednesday.
Iain Lindsay told public Kossuth radio that Brexit would have no immediate effect on foreign nationals in the UK. The ambassador noted that the UK and the EU have two years to complete the divorce process and since the two sides will not begin the exit talks until the autumn, it is unlikely that any formal change will happen for another two and a half years.
He said British companies doing business in Hungary will stay in the market. Although Brexit will alter Hungary and Britain’s relationship, the essence of that relationship will not change, Lindsay said. British companies employ about 55,000 people in Hungary.
The ambassador said he appreciated the sympathy he received from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Foreign Minister Péter Szijjárto after his country’s referendum.
