A cold front will sweep across Hungary on Sunday night, bringing strong winds and a sharp drop in temperatures. Daytime highs will fall to around 20°C for much of next week, while some sheltered areas could see temperatures approach freezing overnight, according to HungaroMet’s forecast released to MTI on Sunday.

The change will be most noticeable early in the week, when gusty winds and occasional showers could disrupt the otherwise sunny weather. Conditions are expected to become calmer and warmer by next weekend.

Strong winds and showers to start the week

On Monday, 21 September, the cloud associated with the cold front should clear southern and eastern Hungary during the morning, giving way to several hours of sunshine. Brief showers are most likely in the north-east, where isolated thunderstorms could also develop.

North-westerly winds will strengthen across much of the country, with stormy gusts possible in some areas. Daytime temperatures are expected to reach 18–24°C.

HungaroMet has also warned that Monday’s thunderstorms in the north-east could bring gusts of 60–75 km/h, potentially accompanied by small hail or ice pellets.

Tuesday will remain mostly sunny between passing clouds, although isolated showers and thunderstorms are still possible, particularly in the north-east. Strong north-westerly winds will affect large parts of Transdanubia and central Hungary.

The cold front-caused temperature drop will become more noticeable: afternoon highs are forecast at 16–20°C, while temperatures could fall to around 4°C overnight in colder, sheltered locations.

Chilly mornings ahead, but sunshine will return

Wednesday is expected to bring plenty of sunshine, with only a few clouds and a chance of a brief shower in eastern or north-eastern Hungary. Daytime temperatures will reach 18–22°C, but some sheltered areas could approach freezing before sunrise.

Thursday will see a temporary increase in cloud cover from the west and north-west. Rain will be more likely in western Hungary, with highs of 17–23°C. Another cold morning is expected, particularly in places protected from the wind.

Friday should be mostly sunny, with only isolated showers. Early-morning temperatures will range from 3°C to 10°C, before rising to 18–23°C in the afternoon.

What will the weekend weather be like in Hungary?

The outlook for Saturday and Sunday, 26–27 September, is more settled. Saturday should be dry and mostly sunny, with lighter winds and afternoon temperatures of 19–24°C.

Sunday is also expected to be sunny and dry. After morning lows of 5–13°C, temperatures could climb to 20–25°C, bringing a milder end to the week.
