Hungary’s government condemns a terrorist attack by the Boko Haram militant group involving the kidnapping of hundreds of Nigerian women and girls, a foreign ministry official said on Friday, expressing the government’s sympathies with the victims and their families.
The Islamist terrorists kidnapped women and girls from refugee camps near the border with Chad on March 6, Tristan Azbej, the state secretary in charge of aiding persecuted Christians, said on Facebook, citing estimates saying that over 200 people were abducted. He said past similar incidents indicated that the victims were “in grave danger”, adding it was critical to rescue them as soon as possible.
Hungary’s government last year devoted special attention to providing humanitarian assistance to the people of Nigeria as well as those living in refugee camps there, Azbej said.
Through its Hungary Helps humanitarian scheme, the government has helped provide food and emergency aid for refugees in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Makurdi, supported medical missions in the Onitsha region, and drilled drinking fountains in Obodoukwu to help cater for residents in that region, he said.
