Hungary expels Iraqi man for illegally crossing border
Budapest, September 16 (MTI) – A Szeged court on Wednesday found an Iraqi man guilty of illegally crossing Hungary’s border and expelled him from the country for one year.
The defendant was accused of crossing the Hungary-Serbia border at dawn on Tuesday. He said he was unaware that crossing the “green border” was a crime, and if he had been, he would have chosen a different route.
This was the first conviction under Hungary’s new laws cracking down on illegal migration which took effect on Tuesday. The judge ruled that the illegal migrant’s expulsion is to be carried out immediately.
The defendant was also ordered to pay 19,000 forints (EUR 61) in legal fees.
