Budapest, August 12 (MTI) – Hungary saw record high migration last year and the increase compared to the previous year was the fastest among all European Union countries, daily Magyar Nemzet reported today.

The number of asylum-seekers was up at nearly 20,000 last year, representing a nine-fold increase from previous years when it averaged 2-3,000, the paper said.

The highest number of applications for refugee status were submitted by Kosovans, Pakistanis, Afghans, Algerians and Syrians. Experts now also project a wave of refugees to arrive from Ukraine.

The paper said, however, that the majority of refugees consider Hungary only as a transit country on the way to Germany and France.
