The Hungarian population is shrinking drastically
Hungary’s population is shrinking: the number of births fell by 8.4 percent in November compared with the same month in the previous year, while deaths went down by 4.7 percent, according to preliminary data published by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the number of marriages went down by 12 percent with 2,724 couples tying the knot.

Fully 6,196 children were born in November, while there were 10,267 deaths, KSH reports.
The natural population loss was 4,071 people compared with 4,005 in November 2023.
Fully 77,703 children were born between December 2023 and November 2024, 9.7 percent less than in the same period twelve months earlier. Altogether 127,835 people died between December 2023 and November 2024, 0.2 percent less than in the year before.
There were 8.1 live births and 13.1 deaths per thousand inhabitants in the first eleven months.

Consequences of growing number of Hungarian women not seeing a bright future in conservative Hungary and therefore either moving out of country and staying permanently abroad where they can give birth in much better hospital conditions and can provide their children better care and a brighter future with good education options. Or deciding not to have children at all. Neither is a bad choice for the young women.
It’s amazing, isn’t it, that when the government seeks to improve the birth rate, maternity wards aren’t fully refurbished and sufficiently staffed by well trained professionals, instead they languish in the same state of decay as the rest of public healthcare in Hungary. It’s doubly perplexing when considering the amount of state cash being spent on family support, they’re obviously putting serious money behind the problem, so why aren’t at least maternity wards the shining star of Hungarian healthcare?
