Hungary split by wild weather: Nearly 17°C temperature gap between East and West

HungaroMet Plc. reported on Saturday that there was an almost 17 degrees Celsius difference in peak temperatures between eastern and western Hungary on Friday.

According to their Facebook post, while temperatures in Western Hungary resembled those typical of March, the eastern regions experienced weather more akin to June. Only a few areas recorded temperatures close to the seasonal average; in fact, the Transdanubian region was significantly cooler than usual, while the eastern side of the country was notably warmer.

An infographic shared by HungaroMet revealed that western Hungary was on average 8–9 degrees Celsius colder than normal for this time of year, while eastern Hungary was about 4–5 degrees warmer than average.

The report highlighted the stark contrast between two locations: in Szentgotthárd, Vas County, where the skies remained overcast and rain persisted throughout the day, the maximum temperature reached only 10.4°C. Meanwhile, in the sunnier town of Körösszakál in Hajdú-Bihar County, temperatures soared to 26.9°C — marking a dramatic difference of nearly 17°C between the two areas.

HungaroMet also noted that while eastern Hungary experienced more sunshine, scattered showers still occurred, accompanied by lightning, thunder, and even cloudbursts. In Kisköre, Heves County, 30.7 millimetres of rain fell within 24 hours.
