Hungary’s central bank to spend EUR 100m on Hungarian artworks

Budapest, January 17 (MTI) – Foreign-owned Hungarian artworks are the target of a 100 million euro buyback scheme run by the National Bank of Hungary.

The bank will set out to buy the works as part of the scheme launched on Thursday.

A body of art experts and the bank’s own management will coordinate the programme running until end-2018.

Ordinary Hungarians will be given an opportunity to recommend which works of art to buy.

The NBH said the programme was similar to the practices of other central banks that buy works of art.
