Hungary’s public transport may change significantly in 2023: new season ticket on the horizon

The government would like public transport to become an alternative to cars and driving. Therefore, the Orbán administration is working on introducing a new county season ticket scheme, János Lázár, the Minister of Construction and Development, told the Hungarian News Agency.

The minister said he would like the new scheme to kick off next January. Earlier, he told the Hungarian press that for Budapest residents, it was a great advantage to travel everywhere in the capital using only one season ticket for HUF 9,500 (EUR 23.40). Meanwhile, travelling is more difficult and expensive in rural areas because no such season ticket exists.

The new county season ticket will change that situation, telex.hu said.

Lázár’s ministry received public transport from László Palkovics’s Ministry of Technology and Industry after Palkovics’s resignation in November. Lázár highlighted that the new, unified national timetable and tariff system would not be operational by 1 January 2023 despite the promises of the later secretary for public transport, Dávid Vitézy.
