Illegal Migration Dramatically Up
Budapest, February 20 (MTI) – The number of illegal migrants arriving in Hungary considerably increased last year, primarily along the southern border, the national immigration office’s deputy director said today.
A total of 25,000 illegal migrants arrived in Hungary, a part of the Schengen zone country, last year, 18,900 of whom applied for asylum, said Attila Kiss in north Hungary’s Miskolc.
The situation was similar only in the 1990s, he said.
The increase in asylum applications was almost nine-fold, compared with 2012, he said.
Most asylum-seekers, nearly 6,000, arrived from Kosovo and the rest from Pakistan, Afghanistan and North African countries, he added.
