Italian migrant smugglers got a jail sentence

A Hungarian court has sentenced two Italian nationals to 17 months and 16 months in prison for attempting to smuggle illegal migrants across the country, the Bacs-Kiskun County Chief Prosecutor’s Office said on Friday.

Under the Baja District Court’s binding ruling, after serving their sentence, the two men would be expelled from the country for a period of 3 years.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the two men drove their vehicle to the village of Bacsszentgyorgy near the Hungary-Serbia border in the early hours of Aug. 25 to take on four Albanian migrants whom they were to smuggle to Italy via Austria.

Border patrols were alerted to the vehicle near the border town of Gara and signalled it to pull over. The smugglers, however, ignored the order and sped off towards Baja, to the north. After a ten-minute chase, the smugglers were caught and placed under arrest in Baja.
