Hungarian mum’s 1.5-year fight for her son ends in court siding with alcoholic dad in US: Adrienn couldn’t even say goodbye

Kovács Adrienn’s Budapest flat stands silent: no one’s playing with four-year-old Armaan’s toys any more (he’s referred to as Armin or Armi on various platforms). The little boy – a Hungarian citizen – was taken from nursery by police and “returned” to the US to live with his father, who struggles with alcohol problems. For the past 1.5 years, his mum has piled up evidence of the man’s dangerous lifestyle, but the Hungarian court still ruled in the father’s favour.
Adrienn and the American man’s romance started off perfectly: the young Hungarian woman met her partner in the US, they had their son Armaan, and everything seemed fine – they were happy. But the dad started drinking more and more often, got caught drink-driving several times by police, and Adrienn felt her child’s safety was at risk, Blikk reported.

Escape to Budapest, then the battle begins
At the end of 2022, with the dad’s agreement, mum and son moved back to Budapest to live with the grandparents. Things were peaceful for six months, then the father turned up with lawyers and demanded the child back aggressively. He even flew to Budapest in person, allegedly drunk. Adrienn gathered every bit of evidence – police reports, witness statements – but the Hungarian court decided Armaan belonged in the US with his dad.
The mum appealed; she didn’t want to hand her son over “like a parcel” at a lawyer’s office. But her fight was in vain: a few weeks ago, police showed up at the nursery.

A complicated case, no marriage but she had a child? Not in a child’s best interest. No divorce or legal separation mentioned so assume it was just a verbal agreement, then a typical drunkards greedy needs played a part. But in the US many kids end up dead or terribly abused by parents who drink and do other drugs. So I’m surprised that the father gets custody in this circumstance. And to take a child from a m other to now be put in care of the state…tragic. Hope the mother has a good job so she can prove that she deserves to be the primary parent, giving the child the benefits all children deserve. And as for language, they want to be sure about all she says to the child, but how unfair for him not to use a language he used at his home in Hungary.
Biased story where you see only the mother’s side. Typical story where one parent kidnaps the child away from the other one. When you have a child with someone, married or not, you cannot just move away to start off a new life. How do we know that the depiction of the father as a drunkard is accurate? Maybe the Hungarian mom is struggling with some addictions too…
Tamas, I absolutely agree with you! If the child was born as an American citizen, the mother acted against the law. As a parent, she doesn’t have the right to just take her child anywhere away from the father, without going to court a front of a family judge including the father at the hearing. By law , she can’t even take the child out of the US without the fathers signing and agreeing to the passport petition for the child’s trip with the mother. so apparently the mother forged the fathers signature on the passport request documents. That is against the law and considered a crime and kidnapping!-regardles they are married or not.She should hve went to court in the USA requesting full custody first, than asking the father to gave up his rights to the child. But even then who knows the outcome because the only way the father have no right to the child if the court orders it for some reason, or the father gives up his parental right, so yes she committed the crime of kidnaping her own child sadly
