Jobbik challenges PM Orbán over pensioner issues

Opposition Jobbik leader Gábor Vona has challenged Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for a debate on the situation of pensioners in Hungary. 

Vona told a press conference on Monday that the debate, which he proposed should be broadcast live and with both parties wearing a lie detector, should focus on “real problems” such as the sustainability of pensions as well as facilitating retirement for men after 40 years of work irrespective of the retirement age. Arguing for the latter proposal, Vona referred to the low life expectancy of men, but added that it was an “option rather than an obligation”.

Vona insisted that “the government is not interested in the opinion of elderly people, nor does it believe in them”.

Concerning the viability of the pension system, Vona reiterated his party’s initiative to establish a European wage union, and argued that “decent wages will facilitate a sustainable pension system”.

The Jobbik leader also called for better care for the elderly both at home and in institutions.
