Paris (MTI) – Parliamentary speaker László Kövér held talks about Hungary in relation to European issues and the migrants crisis with his French counterparts in Paris on Tuesday.
Kövér met (Socialist) President of the National Assembly Claude Bartolone and later (Republican) President of the French Senate Gerard Larcher and they reviewed bilateral parliamentary and inter-governmental relations.
The visit proved “more successful than expectations” in making Hungary’s positions understood, Kövér said.
Centre-right politicians, who are in opposition in the national assembly but in majority in the senate, told him that a “caricature-like image” has developed in the French press about Hungary in connection with the migrant crisis. It is necessary to make things clear with the help of direct exchanges of opinions, they added.
Kövér said he explained to his French partners the Hungarian position in the migrant issue and they showed understanding.
“We could agree that every state has the right to maintain and promote its interests within the framework of joint agreements and act in line with them”, Kövér said.
