A day at Hungary’s Lake Balaton has become even more expensive for food lovers, with hamburger prices reaching new highs across the country’s most popular summer destination. While visitors can still find traditional beach snacks such as lángos and ice cream at relatively moderate prices, burgers have firmly entered premium territory.

According to a survey by Veol, most beach buffets around Lake Balaton now charge well above HUF 3,000 for a basic hamburger, with premium versions frequently costing more than HUF 5,000. (1 euro = 353 forints)

Some examples include:

  • Balatonfüred: beef burger with red onion jam and chips – HUF 5,390
  • Zamárdi: hamburger with fries – HUF 5,200 (extra beef patty: HUF 2,400)
  • Balatonlelle: classic hamburger – HUF 3,500
  • Balatongyörök: hamburger – HUF 3,650
  • Keszthely: chicken burger – HUF 3,750

Adding bacon, cheddar cheese, extra meat, fried egg, or jalapeños can push the total significantly higher, meaning a complete burger meal can easily cost HUF 5,000–7,000 per person (EUR 14–20).

Ice cream and lángos remain comparatively affordable

Although social media often highlights eye-catching prices, tourism organisations argue that some reports exaggerate the true cost of eating around Lake Balaton. According to the Balaton Tourism Association, the widely reported HUF 1,200–1,500 price for a scoop of ice cream is far from typical. Most ice cream parlours still charge HUF 600–800 per scoop, depending on the town. Typical prices include:

  • Balatonmáriafürdő: HUF 550–650
  • Balatonlelle: HUF 600–700
  • Balatonfüred: HUF 650–800
  • Siófok: HUF 650–800
  • Tihany: HUF 700–800

Lángos prices have also increased but remain below burger prices. This summer, visitors can expect to pay approximately:

  • Plain lángos: HUF 1,300
  • Sour cream: HUF 1,600
  • Cheese: HUF 1,700
  • Cheese and sour cream: around HUF 2,300

Balaton businesses face a challenging summer

Restaurant and hotel operators say that prices are only part of the story this year. Industry representatives told Világgazdaság that visitor numbers have so far been weaker than expected, with weekday traffic remaining relatively quiet despite the start of the school holidays. Tamás Flesch, president of the Hungarian Hotel and Restaurant Association, said it is still too early to judge the season, as weather continues to play a decisive role in visitor numbers.

He added that hospitality businesses have generally limited price increases to around 5–6% this year, which is far below the 15–20% annual rises seen during the high-inflation years of 2022 and 2023. However, businesses are also facing stronger competition from neighbouring Croatia. Thanks to the stronger Hungarian forint, many Hungarians may now find a Croatian seaside holiday more affordable than in previous years, creating additional pressure on Balaton tourism.

Premium food still part of the Balaton experience

Despite the higher prices, hamburgers are one of the most popular meals at Balaton beach buffets alongside lángos, gyros and fish soup. For visitors planning a day by Hungary’s “sea”, however, food expenses can quickly become a substantial part of the holiday budget.
