LMP accuses government of subordinating all developments to 2017 World Aquatics

Budapest LMP

Budapest (MTI) – The green opposition LMP has accused the government of subordinating all developments to the 2017 World Aquatics Championships which has a continually growing budget.

Antal Csárdi, the party’s Budapest representative told a press conference on Sunday, that it would be worth considering how much Budapest residents need this event when its costs far exceed the capabilities of the city’s budget.

The budget started at 25 billion forints (EUR 79.8m) and now it is already at around 100 billion forints. This money could finance more important tasks, such as the revamp of the third metro line, improving social conditions in the city, or developments in health care, education and an affordable housing scheme for Budapest residents.

He added that the capital is being developed along the interests of firms close to the government.

The opposition DK party called on the government on Sunday to provide financing for the metro revamp project without delay. Erzsébet Németh Gy, a Budapest representative of the party, said the government must stop “playing around with” Budapest residents. More than 400,000 travellers use the third metro line daily and people are afraid because they cannot be certain whether they will reach their destination when getting on the metro, she said. She added that DK will continue collecting signatures urging the revamp.
