PHOTOS: Orbán’s challenger Magyar holds demonstration, calls for boycott of ‘propaganda media’s products’

The leader of Hungary’s opposition Tisza Party called for “a boycott of the propaganda media’s products” at a demonstration held at the headquarters of MTVA, the Media Service Support and Asset Management Fund (MTVA), on Saturday afternoon.

Péter Magyar asked the rally’s participants to boycott MTVA as well as Hir TV, TV2, news portals Origo and Index, daily Magyar Nemzet and the Metropol newspaper, and “every tentacle” of the “Rogán propaganda”, referring to cabinet office head Antal Rogán.
He called for the elimination of the “propaganda machine” and an objective news broadcast by the public service media.
The opposition politician demanded that news channel M1 report about the demonstration in a live broadcast or, if it missed to do so, show “unedited footage” of what happened at the event.
The Tisza leader also demanded that he could present the party’s 16-point petition in a live broadcast.
Magyar was sent out of the MTVA building
Although Magyar entered the MTVA building, he was not given the opportunity to read out the party’s demands. Upon entering the building, Magyar said that he was informed by Gábor Simon, an employee of the public media, that he had “no right to enter the building”. He was also handed a note saying that MTV was covering the protest and that “opposition politicians were still welcome in their studios”.
The politician then read out the statement from the public media which stated that he had organised a violent demonstration in front of the MTVA headquarters and that the party’s 16-point list of demands concerning public media had been presented in the newscast. It was said that the leader of the Tisza Party would even interfere in the broadcasting structure of MTVA.

Public media reported in advance that the Tisza Party would attack the MTVA headquarters with axes and picks. Magyar repeatedly stressed during the demonstration that everyone should remain calm and peaceful and not give in to provocation.
At the end of the demonstration, supporters of the Tisza Party formed a torch-lit procession in front of the MTVA headquarters.
