Hungarian racing talent Martin Molnár celebrated a landmark moment in his career on Sunday by securing his first-ever podium finish on home soil during the GB3 Championship weekend at the Hungaroring.
The Rodin Motorsport driver crossed the line in second place after a dramatic race filled with safety cars, retirements and technical failures, delighting the home crowd with one of the strongest performances of his GB3 career. The result marks Molnár’s fourth podium finish in the British Formula 3 championship and his first in Hungary.
Chaotic race creates opportunity
Starting from third on the grid alongside teammate Abbi Pulling, Molnár made a clean getaway and comfortably held his position as pole-sitter Nikita Bedrin and Deagen Fairclough battled fiercely for the lead through the opening corners. Their duel was interrupted almost immediately when a first-lap incident eliminated Peter Bouzinelos and Rowan Campbell-Pilling, prompting the deployment of the safety car.
Even bigger drama followed shortly afterwards. Fairclough, who had been running second, suffered a technical failure and was forced to retire, promoting Molnár into second place behind Bedrin. After two safety car periods and multiple restarts, the Hungarian looked increasingly confident as the race settled into rhythm.

Brilliant recovery secures second place
Once DRS became available, Maxim Rehm briefly overtook Molnár for second position at Turn 1. However, the Hungarian fought back within a few corners to reclaim the place in an impressive wheel-to-wheel battle. Moments later, Rehm’s own race came to an abrupt end after his car developed a technical problem, leaving Molnár with clear air behind him.
Although Bedrin had opened a gap of more than three seconds, Molnár produced an excellent final stint, steadily reducing the deficit while comfortably keeping Lucas Fluxá behind. He eventually crossed the finish line just over two seconds behind Bedrin, securing an emotional runner-up finish in front of his home supporters.

Molnár: “I’ll remember these moments forever”
After the race, Molnár reflected on both the challenges and the emotion of achieving his first home podium.
“I made a good start and managed to keep third place while staying close to the leaders. Then the safety car came out immediately, and after the restart there was a bit of confusion because we didn’t really understand what had happened.”
He admitted making a small mistake that briefly cost him second place but was able to recover after Rehm encountered mechanical problems.
“I’ve experienced technical failures myself this season, so I’m happy that this time luck was on my side at my home race. Our pace wasn’t particularly strong at the beginning, but towards the end it improved significantly and I was able to close the gap to Bedrin.”
The 18-year-old also thanked the Hungarian fans for their support.
“The Hungarian supporters gave me so much energy even before the start, and afterwards it was incredible to see their joy. I’ll remember these moments forever.”

One more race remains
The Hungaroring weekend concludes with the third and final GB3 race, which uses a reversed-grid format. Molnár will start from tenth on the grid as he aims to finish the home event on another high note. With confidence boosted by his breakthrough home podium and strong race pace in the closing stages, the young Hungarian will be hoping to produce another impressive recovery drive in front of the local crowd.
