Hungary is set for a scorching start to the final week of May, with temperatures expected to climb above 30°C in several parts of the country before a cold front brings a noticeable cooldown midweek, according to the latest forecast from HungaroMet.

Summer heat arrives early

Monday will bring plenty of sunshine alongside thin and patchy clouds, with occasional showers possible in some areas. Northerly winds may strengthen across Transdanubia and the north-eastern regions, with daytime highs ranging between 27°C and 32°C.

Tuesday is expected to remain mostly sunny and dry. Temperatures could rise even further, reaching between 28°C and 33°C during the afternoon, while overnight lows will generally stay between 11°C and 18°C.

Cold front to hit Hungary on Wednesday

The hottest day of the week could arrive on Wednesday, when temperatures may peak between 29°C and 34°C. Sunshine will dominate for much of the day, although cloud cover is expected to increase later in the afternoon.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms could develop in the south-western and north-eastern parts of the country by evening. Winds turning northerly are forecast to strengthen significantly, with stormy gusts possible around thunderstorms.

Sharp drop in temperatures from Thursday

Following the cold front, temperatures will fall noticeably on Thursday. Despite sunny conditions and mostly dry weather, afternoon highs are expected to drop to between 20°C and 26°C. Breezy northerly winds may continue across large areas of the country.

Friday will remain dry and sunny, with temperatures gradually recovering to between 22°C and 28°C during the day.

After an early taste of summer heat, Hungary’s weather is to remain changeable as May comes to an end.
