Increased flights to Munich from Debrecen
Lufthansa is expanding its services between the second largest Hungarian city and Munich, Dehir reports. Starting in April, flights will increase from three times a week to five times a week, adding Thursday and Sunday flights to the existing Monday, Wednesday, and Friday schedule. This expansion is partly driven by the BMW Group’s operations in Debrecen, which require enhanced connectivity with Munich for training and business purposes.
New and returning destinations
In addition to the increased Munich flights, Debrecen is also seeing the return of popular routes. Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air will resume its flights between Debrecen and Larnaca, Cyprus, starting 1 April, operating twice a week until 25 October. This route offers travellers a chance to visit the beautiful island of Cyprus during its most pleasant season.
Furthermore, Debrecen’s airport is set to introduce several new charter flights. These include destinations like Crete (Heraklion), Türkiye (Antalya), and Tunisia (Monastir), which will become accessible from the Hungarian city starting in the coming months.
Smartwings expands services
The Smartwings group, through its Hungarian subsidiary, is adding new routes from Debrecen. Starting in early June, flights will be available to Barcelona, Spain, and Tirana, Albania, once a week each. This marks the first time Tirana will be connected to Debrecen via a scheduled flight.
Ryanair’s entry

Ryanair, the Irish low-cost carrier, has announced plans to expand its operations in Hungary, with Debrecen and the Lake Balaton region being considered for future bases by 2030. This development could significantly boost tourism and economic activity in the region by offering more affordable flights and increasing accessibility.
These developments symbolise the second largest Hungarian city’s growing importance as a travel hub in Eastern Europe, offering residents and visitors more options for exploring Europe and beyond.
