A nationwide inspection programme has been launched from 1 August to scrutinise the battery industry’s entire operational chain, the minister responsible for the living environment said on Facebook on Tuesday.

Mr Gajdos said that in Hungary, battery manufacturing can only operate in a socially acceptable way under strict official oversight, transparent rules and genuine accountability, MTI wrote.
The inspections will cover plants’ actual capacity, material use, emissions, water consumption and waste management, as well as facilities linked to battery production, solvents and the handling of industrial waste, he said.
According to the minister, the checks will not be limited to the examination of submitted documents. On site, the authorities will compare the data contained in permits with actual operations, and will examine the entire process from the route of raw materials through emissions to waste disposal.

Where justified, sampling and laboratory testing will also be carried out, while in the event of a serious breach of the rules or a risk to the environment, the authorities will take immediate action, he added.
Mr Gajdos stressed that the programme’s aim is to expose and end infringements, and to strengthen regulation, licensing practice and official inspections.
