Hungary launches new night trains from Budapest for summer travellers!

Good news for summer festival-goers, party enthusiasts, and weekend adventurers: MÁV is launching new night train services from Budapest in several directions, making it even easier to get home from the capital. The changes align with the extended metro operating hours introduced on June 1 and take effect today, 5 July, so be sure to check the updated schedules!
New routes on popular lines

With the expansion of night services, MÁV aims to improve access from Budapest to suburban and rural areas. According to a report by HVG, the new schedule includes the following updates:
Toward Győr: A new night train will run on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from Déli Railway Station to Győr at 1:25 AM. This service connects directly to the extended metro schedule.
Toward Dabas: On the Budapest–Lajosmizse line, starting July 6, a new train will depart from Nyugati Railway Station at 12:30 AM toward Dabas on weekends and holidays. The last train toward Lajosmizse will also be adjusted: from Sunday to Thursday, it will depart 35 minutes later at night, and from Monday to Friday, it will leave at 12:05 AM to ensure passengers can catch it after the final M3 metro at Kőbánya-Kispest.
Toward Balatonfüred: The popular Bagolyvonat (Owl Train) will also see schedule changes. Starting July 5, the train that departs from Déli at 1:40 AM on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays will now run 20 minutes earlier along the entire route.
More improvements on the way
MÁV has announced that starting 28 July, night services will also be expanded on the Esztergom and Veresegyház lines once renovations at Rákosrendező Station are completed. This will be welcome news for those heading to concerts, meet-ups, or city events over summer weekends who want an easy ride home.
Boost for tourism too
The updated schedule also supports tourism in the capital: with nighttime trains, it’s easier for travellers from outside Budapest to attend evening events—whether it’s a concert in the city or a party by Lake Balaton. The expansion is closely synced with the city’s transport system, so you won’t miss your train even after the last metro.
MÁV’s train schedules and night departure times are subject to change, so travellers are advised to check the official MÁV website or the MÁV app for the latest details.
