New opportunities opening up in Hungary-Austria relations
The formation of a new Austrian government presents a new opportunity for Hungary-Austria relations to develop, the minister of human resources has said.
Zoltán Balog told MTI by phone late on Monday after visiting Austria that he had met with Johanna Mikl-Leitner, provincial governor of Lower Austria, in Sankt Polten and held a presentation on EU regional policy at the event organised by the Danube Region and Central Europe Institute.
He said Mikl-Leitner, an European People’s Party politician who was Austria’s interior minister, has already cooperated well with the Hungarian government on border protection.
Traditionally good bilateral ties now have another chance to flourish following the Austrian elections, especially in the area of migration policy, he said.
Given its historical and cultural background, Austria can now become more involved in cooperation with the Visegrád Group and join in economic cooperation that the V4 maintains with Germany, he added.
Balog also argued for bringing the European Union closer to its citizens.
