Hungarian secondary school students awarded at EU Contest for Young Scientists

Three Hungarian secondary school students fetched special awards at the 32nd EU Contest for Young Scientists at the University of Salamanca in Spain, held online from Sept. 17 to 19, the Hungarian Association for Innovation said on Tuesday.

The finals of the contest held annually for promising young scientists aged 14 to 20 involved 114 projects from 34 countries, the association said.

The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) Prize went to Boglárka Ecsedi from Bocskai István Secondary School, in Hajdúböszörmény, for her project dubbed Rip Current Detection – An Orientation-aware Machine Learning Approach.

The University of Salamanca’s Salamanca Cancer Research Center (CIC) Prize went to Erik Seitz from the Benedictine Secondary School of Pannonhalma for a project dubbed Development of a new, multicellular network model of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and finding a new potential drug target by building hybrid EMT in the model.

Gábor Gergő Balázs from Bólyai János Secondary School, in Bólya, was awarded the Wolfram Research Prize for his project dubbed In the footsteps of an invisible companion around an exotic eclipsing binary star system.
