New statistics: Number of births in free fall, Hungary’s population decreasing drastically

The number of births in March fell by 8.9 percent, while deaths were up 4.9 percent compared with the same month the previous year, according to Central Statistical Office (KSH) preliminary data.

Fully 5,885 children were born and 11,198 people died compared with March 2024. Marriages declined by 2.0 percent in the period, KSH said in a statement on Friday.

The natural population decline was 5,313 people, compared with 4,218 in March last year. KSH data show that 2,968 couples tied the knot, down 61 compared with March 2024.

In January-March, 17,945 children were born, 7.2 percent fewer than the same period the previous year. The estimated total fertility rate per woman was 1.31, compared to 1.38 a year earlier.

Fully 35,245 people died, 4.4 percent more than in the same period the previous year. Fully 6,614 couples got married, 6.4 percent fewer than the same period a year earlier.
