Following the entries of Los Angeles, Paris, and Rome, Budapest has presented its logo for the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics bid, origo.hu reports. The logo is centred around water and freedom, and it aims to express the open-mindedness of the Hungarian capital.

The logo was revealed in a ceremony on Gellért Hill by Pál Schmitt, honorary president of the Hungarian Olympic Committee (MOB); István Tarlós, mayor of Budapest; Balázs Fürjes, leader of the Budapest bid; László Szabó, head of the Hungarian Paralympic Committee; Chris Mattheisen, director of Magyar Telekom, the sponsor of the bid; and the graphic designer team who designed the logo.

The main elements of the logo are water and universal value of freedom expressed by the Liberty Statue. The logo was designed by the Graphasel Design Studio, whose work was selected by a jury from 200 entries. According to the jury, the logo perfectly expresses the values of the Budapest bid: optimism, vitality, modernity and a young, creative approach. The logo was not designed by an international agency, but selected in an open competition.

“The circumstances have changed and so have our chances,” said István Tarlós at the opening event of the Budapest 2024! Festival. The mayor emphasized that the Olympics should not be the privilege of merely 20 cities. “We want to provide every opportunity for the Olympics,” he said. “It is also an immense propaganda opportunity for Budapest.”

According to Zsolt Borkai, president of MOB, Hungary should only apply if there is consensus, and the economical calculations show that the expenses will be repaid. Budapest is improving and development has begun in sport as well, he said.

Balázs Fürjes, leader of the bid said, the Agenda 2020 was “designed for Budapest”, giving greater chances for the capital. “Hungary is on a fantastic path of development between 2004 and 2024,” he said, adding that by 2024, regardless of the Olympics, Hungary’s natural development will have made the country suitable for hosting the event. “We are an Olympic nation,” he said as well.

The Olympic host city will be selected in September 2017, in Lima.
