Orbán congratulates Kramp-Karrenbauer on election as CDU leader
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Monday congratulated Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, who on Thursday was elected leader of Germany’s senior ruling party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the prime minister’s press chief told MTI.
In a letter to Kramp-Karrenbauer, Orbán said that she took over the party at a “crucial moment” for the CDU, for Germany and for the European Union.
Hungarian Christian Democrats continue to see the relations between ruling Fidesz and the CDU as of strategic importance, going far beyond the level of bilateral ties, Orbán wrote.
This is all the more true in view of the upcoming EP elections where Fidesz and CDU, both belonging to the European People’s Party, aim to preserve their values and strengthen the cohesion, security and competitiveness of the European Union, Orbán said.
Both Fidesz and CDU should fight to make the EPP the strongest and indispensable player defining the EU political discourse in coming times, Orbán said.
