Former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán lost power after suffering a devastating defeat in the 12 April general election. Since then, he has been largely silent, only urging his supporters to remain united and promising them a renewed Fidesz. However, Hungarian investigative journalist Szabolcs Panyi reports that, behind the scenes, there may be crucial talks about securing the former premier a role that would grant him immunity.

Only Orbán’s immunity matters

Panyi said he had contacted various Hungarian and foreign sources who outlined a scenario in which Orbán could leave Hungary, obtain diplomatic immunity, and establish a new base in the United States. According to Panyi, the idea originates from pro-Orbán MAGA circles, and Argentina’s President Javier Milei may play a key role.

The proposal involves securing a high-ranking position within the United Nations for the former Hungarian prime minister. The portfolio itself would be largely unimportant; the primary objective would be to grant him full diplomatic immunity.

Under the 1946 UN Convention on Privileges and Immunities, only the Secretary-General, Under-Secretaries-General, and Assistant Secretaries-General receive full diplomatic immunity, equivalent to that of an ambassador and extending to their spouses and minor children. Heads of specialised agencies also enjoy full immunity. Lower-ranking UN officials are granted only functional immunity, which protects them from legal proceedings solely in connection with actions carried out in their official capacity.

Former premier’s US visit might serve the cause

One source told Panyi that both the United States and Argentina’s President Javier Milei may back the plan. Milei’s endorsement could prove crucial, as the next UN Secretary-General may be Rafael Grossi, an Argentine and head of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

It may be that Orbán travels to the United States this summer not only to watch matches at the FIFA World Cup, but also to negotiate his potential new role. This could mean he remains in the country for longer than a brief visit.

We have previously reported that his eldest daughter, Ráhel, and her husband, István Tiborcz—one of Hungary’s wealthiest individuals, who amassed much of his fortune during Orbán’s time in government through state procurement contracts—have moved to New York with their children. They stated that the move was due to Ráhel’s studies in the United States.
