Paks to switch to 15-month fuel cycle
Budapest, December 8 (MTI) – The Paks nuclear plant has received regulatory approval to switch to a 15-month fuel cycle from the current 12-month one, the plant operator said on Tuesday.
Extending the length of the cycles allows the operator to cut maintenance costs and downtime as well as reduce the amount of nuclear waste. Production can be ramped up, which should result in a 1 percent drop in Hungary’s annual electricity imports, said Paks Atomeromu.
The longer-lasting fuel rods will be installed in all four reactors of the plant by the end of 2016.
Hungary is getting ready to build another two blocks at the Paks nuclear power plant by 2023 and 2024, respectively.
Meanwhile, Hungary’s state-owned company for managing radioactive waste (RHK) will spend 6.3 billion forints (EUR 20m) out of its 11.9 billion budget in 2016 on developing its facilities, managing director Ferenc Kereki said on Tuesday.
RHK operates sites for radioactive waste management at Puspokszilagy, in northern Hungary, Bataapati, in southern Hungary, and at the Paks nuclear plant.
RHK is conducting a programme to determine the final location of an underground long-term disposal facility in the Mecsek Hills, in south-western Hungary.
