There will be no need for voluntary consumption cuts from Friday, PM Péter Magyar announced on his Facebook page on Thursday evening.

Magyar said: “Together, we did it, and we protected our country’s energy security. Thank you, Hungary!” He added that the Defence Council’s decisions will be announced on Friday morning.

Several heat records, wind-speed record broken on Thursday

Multiple heat records, along with a wind-speed record, were broken on Thursday, the weather service HugaroMet said on Facebook, citing preliminary data. The new national daytime heat record was recorded in Kiskunfélegyháza, where the temperature reached 41.8 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous record of 40.2 C set in Orosháza in 1905.

Budapest also saw a new daytime and all-time heat record of 41.6 C, recorded at the Ujpest station. The previous daily record for the capital was 37.8 C in 2012 at the Budapest city centre station, while the previous absolute record was set on Wednesday at the Újpest station.

Meanwhile, a thunderstorm also led to a new daily wind-speed record in Szolnok, where a gust of 113kmh was recorded. The previous daily wind record was 107kmh in Körösladány in 2010.
