A dramatic police chase ended in a crash on the M0 motorway near Gyál on Wednesday night after a driver fleeing officers entered the road in the wrong direction. Police fired shots at the car’s tyres during the pursuit, while two passengers were later taken to hospital.

According to the police, officers tried to stop the driver in Dány on the evening of 4 November after discovering that his vehicle did not have compulsory third-party motor insurance. The man ignored their instructions and drove off, prompting a pursuit through several settlements.

Police fired shots at the fleeing car

After repeated warnings failed to stop the driver, one of the officers fired shots at the vehicle’s tyres. No one was injured during the use of firearms, although the shots caused the tyres to deflate.

The driver nevertheless continued and entered the M0 motorway travelling against the direction of traffic. He eventually lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the safety barrier. Officers arrested him at the scene.

Two other people were travelling in the car. Ambulance crews took both passengers to hospital. Police have not released further details, citing the ongoing investigation.

Witnesses describe a near-disaster on the M0

Footage of the incident, which reportedly took place at around 10 pm near Gyál on the M3-bound side of the M0, was shared on TikTok. A witness quoted by BpiAutósok said that electronic signs above the motorway had already been warning drivers about a vehicle approaching in the wrong direction several kilometres earlier.

Another witness described how close the incident came to causing a serious collision. The driver of a lorry reportedly noticed the oncoming car just as he was allowing another vehicle to enter the outer lane. He swerved back and switched on his hazard lights.

Several motorists then braked sharply and tried to avoid the car. According to the witness, the tyres of some vehicles were smoking as drivers took evasive action. The commenter said it was only thanks to luck that a major pile-up did not occur.

Police have not confirmed these witness accounts in their statement and have declined to provide further information while the investigation is underway.
