Documents from the “pardon case” file published on Tuesday by the Justice Ministry show that Judit Varga, the minister at the time, did not support a pardon for Endre K, the prime minister announced at an extraordinary press conference presenting the documents.
Péter Magyar said that in the case involving Endre K’s pardon petition, there were 49 defendants in 48 cases. The Justice Ministry’s department for issuing pardons did not support Endre K’s petition, he said.
In the document sent to the president, the justice minister, in line with the ministry’s recommendation, proposed pardons in three cases and submitted the cases of the other 46 individuals — including Endre K’s — which meant that pardons were not recommended for them.
Magyar called it “unprecedented” that President Katalin Novák signed and the then justice minister countersigned the pardon Endre K on the same day.
