Relatives Of 1956 Martyrs Protest Against Anniversary Concerts
Budapest, June 16 (MTI) – Several relatives of 1956 martyrs have protested against a concert that rock groups Omega and Scorpions will give in Heroes’ Square on Monday evening, the granddaughter of martyred former prime minister Imre Nagy told MTI.
They protest against “the crude and profane government event,” a statement signed by Katalin Janosi and co-signed by the widow of Pal Maleter as well as the daughter of Jozsef Szilagyi said.
June 16 is the memorial day for Imre Nagy and other martyrs, marking the sacrifice they made for their country and their martyrdom, the statement said. On a day for mourning, it is not right to have people dancing “at the site of a cathartic memorial service.”
It is “inhumane and hurtful” to hold a “joyful celebration,” as one government employee described it, at the site, the statement added.
