Have the remains of the great Hungarian ruler King Matthias been found? — VIDEO

If you’ve ever been to Hungary, you’ve probably come across the name King Matthias on statues, street names, or historic buildings, and that’s no coincidence, as he’s widely regarded as one of the greatest (if not the greatest) rulers in Hungarian history. Now, a groundbreaking discovery in Székesfehérvár may have unearthed his remains. Buried deep within a royal tomb, a skeleton matching the legendary ruler’s age and features has sparked fresh hope among historians. While DNA confirmation is still to come, the clues point to a remarkable find.
Long-lost remains identified?
As Index reports, a recent archaeological breakthrough in Hungary may have identified the long-lost remains of King Matthias Hunyadi, a revered 15th-century monarch. The discovery was made in the ossuary of the Basilica of the Virgin Mary in Székesfehérvár, where a skeleton was found that closely matches the ruler’s age at death, 47 years. The research, spearheaded by Emese Gábor of the Gyula László Centre at the Institute of Hungarian Research, included facial reconstruction techniques and comparisons with the already genetically verified skull of János Corvin, King Matthias’ known descendant.

About the study
The study involved advanced methods of 3D modelling and plastic facial reconstruction, with the results independently analysed by renowned forensic anthropologist Martin Trautmann. Crucially, Trautmann was not informed of the skulls’ suspected origins but independently confirmed a strong familial connection between the two. Given that János Corvin had no twin and other close relatives’ burial sites are known, researchers conclude that the skeleton from the royal tomb is, with high probability, that of King Matthias himself.
The Institute of Hungarian Research has urged caution despite the compelling anthropological evidence. In an official statement, they noted that while the findings are promising, full scientific verification is still underway. Genetic testing, the final step in confirming the identity of the remains, has yet to be completed. Nonetheless, this potential discovery of King Matthias’ remains marks a significant moment in Hungarian historical research and could offer valuable insight into the legacy of one of the nation’s most iconic rulers.
Who was King Matthias?
King Matthias, or Matthias Corvinus, was one of Hungary’s most remarkable rulers, known for his military strength, sharp mind, and deep appreciation of learning. He came to the throne in 1458 and quickly turned Hungary into a cultural and political powerhouse. King Matthias was a true Renaissance king; he built an impressive library, supported scholars and artists, and introduced reforms that brought more fairness to the justice system. His legacy still echoes today, with many Hungarians remembering him as the wise and just ruler who helped shape their nation’s golden age.
