Hungarian soldier Robert Brovdi, the commander of “Birds of Magyar” – “Ptakhy Madyara”, a drone attack brigade and known under the military call sign “Magyar”, received the title of Hero of Ukraine from President Zelensky.
A Hungarian soldier received the highest Ukrainian state award
We wrote about an espionage story revealed by the Ukrainian SBU, which states that at least two Transcarpathian locals gathered and leaked information to the Hungarian intelligence services about the positions of the Ukrainian defence forces in the Transcarpathian region. Allegedly, they even monitored locals’ opinions about a Hungarian march-in.
However, today also brought good news concerning the Hungarians living in Ukraine. Transcarpathia, the Westernmost region of the country, belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary for more than 900 years. Therefore, the Hungarian community living there, about 70-80,000 people, should be considered indigenous.
Multiple Hungarians living in the region grabbed weapons after the devastating Russian invasion in 2022. One of them, Sándor Fegyir, after fighting for years on the Eastern front, was assigned to Budapest to serve Ukraine as the country’s ambassador to Hungary. Another one is Viktor Traski, who was also a professor of the Uzhhorod National University (Physics and Mathematics) before the war, and is serving on the Eastern front. HERE is his 2023 New Year’s Eve message.

Mr Brovdi received the award from President Zelensky on 8 May. The Hero of Ukraine is the highest state award in the war-torn country. Mr Brovdi is the commander of the 414th separate strike brigade of unmanned aerial systems running under the nickname the “Birds of Magyar”.
