Spanish troops are set to arrive in Hungary on Wednesday and Thursday for a military exercise, the Ministry of Defence has announced via the state news agency MTI.

The Hungarian Defence Forces’ firing range in the Bakony hills will host Exercise Strong Lineage 2026, designed to support the readiness of NATO’s Multinational Brigade Combat Team based in Slovakia. Convoys from the Spanish contingent are due to enter Hungary through the Tornyiszentmiklós border crossing on Wednesday and Thursday, before proceeding under Hungarian military escort to Camp Croft in Újmajor, the ministry said.

It added that eight convoys carrying nearly 160 combat vehicles and more than 300 सैनिक are expected to arrive during the day on Wednesday, followed by a further five columns on Thursday, bringing approximately 80 additional vehicles and 160 personnel.

Given that the size and movement of these convoys differ from routine road traffic, the Hungarian Defence Forces have urged motorists to exercise caution and cooperation. Drivers have also been warned that entering the space between vehicles in a military convoy is both dangerous and prohibited.

The brigade combat team is stationed at the Lešť military training area in Slovakia and operates as a high-readiness multinational force under Spanish command, subordinate to the Central Europe Multinational Division Headquarters based in Hungary. It is one of eight such formations established along NATO’s eastern flank, built upon allied cooperation, joint training, and coordinated defensive capabilities.

The ministry noted that the combat team will conduct tactical training in Hungary from late May until mid-June, further strengthening cooperation between the units stationed in Hungary and Slovakia.
