An internal investigation has revealed a serious error in record-keeping and administration which resulted in the case of MiG-29 fighter parts previously reported as stolen in the Kecskemet air base, the minister of defence said on Friday.

Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi said on Facebook that according to press reports published on Thursday, police had closed the investigation into the theft of the MiG-29 parts in Kecskemet due to a lack of evidence of crime.

“During the internal investigation … we uncovered the circumstances and determined exactly what happened,” he wrote. The investigation revealed that the sale of an entire MiG-29 aircraft and several parts had already taken place legally, and that the items sold included parts that were later treated as missing or stolen.

“Our internal investigation also made it clear that no theft had occurred; rather, the problem was a serious flaw in the record-keeping and administrative system,” he added.

As a result of the internal investigation, the person responsible for the error was removed from his position, and the necessary measures were taken, he said.
