Students will not be happy with this trend in Hungarian universities
The majority of Hungarian universities are not planning an autumn break this year for 2023/2024. This will save higher education institutions a great deal of money.
Will last year’s trend persist?
Eduline conducted a comprehensive survey of Hungarian higher education institutions. Last year, the autumn break dates had already been set in August in several universities. At Eötvös LorĂ¡nd University, the autumn break was scheduled for 24-29 October, at Corvinus University of Budapest for 24-28 October and at the University of PĂ©cs for 2-4 November.
However, almost all institutions have changed this due to rising energy costs and energy-saving measures. Some universities have entirely abolished the autumn break, while others have moved it to December to save on heating costs.
No autumn break this year
Last year’s panic is supposed to be over. Universities are less worried about overheads. Eduline interviewed several Hungarian higher education institutions, one of which said that they do not feel that introducing energy-saving measures would be justified, adding that the semester will continue at the usual pace, while teaching will be in attendance.
Compared to last year, conditions have not changed. The war between Russia and Ukraine is still ongoing, and the Hungarian government has not introduced any cuts in the rationing of electricity. As a result, heating costs for institutions are still high this year.
Autumn break will be cancelled or significantly shortened in many institutions again this year. At Eötvös LorĂ¡nd University, the University of PĂ©cs and KĂ¡roli GĂ¡spĂ¡r Reformed University, students will have a few days’ break between 30 October and 3 November. At the University of Miskolc, the already scheduled public holidays will be supplemented by rector’s breaks. However, at several institutions, students will only have a day off on 1 November, which is a national holiday anyway.

The entire landscape of Education in Hungary – is in a state of TURMOIL.
This makes total sense. The students are there to work hard and learn. Students do not need a break every 5 minutes. Of course, this policy change will interfere in the students’ fun time. People in the labor force do not get a fall break, do not receive “I am tired” break or waste time for protesting. Students should try to master the subjects, make their parents and people of Hungary proud.
Being a student today is a joke anyway, and I say this as someone who got several master’s degrees and a Ph.D. AND was a college professor, all in the span of the past 20 years. Assignments and other work that used to take a week or more and necessitate endless trips to the library and field can now be done in a couple of hours sitting at a desk. And that’s before we even get to the matter of colleges and universities, especially in thew West but spreading elsewhere fast, being indoctrination factories. Critical thinking and logical analysis are not only not encouraged but are actively punished. I think kids needs to be encouraged to explore all options, such as vocational studies, trade schools, and internships, rather than being practically railroaded into college “education.” Meanwhile, the government should subsidize college degrees that are of use to the society (which means mainly the S.T.E.M. ones) while those wanting to study anything else (particularly the “liberal arts” junk) should pay the full price.
marievontheresa : be interesting in this day and age, come back to Budapest, just the District V area, take a walk, especially outside Government offices, the labour force, the hours per year, those that SMOKE, what time, and “time is money” – they are factually away from there work space.
I will add, that in my opinion, it is ABUSED, over used, “exploited, in the workforce of “modern” times.
In study, it is universally accepted, that in students, the “emersion” of themselves, saturating themselves – there thinking / learning, retainment of information ability, quality of student life-style, health, there heads, never out of there books – statistically from results data universally, does NOT record, that “hit the books” – 24/7 or 365 days a year is a Healthy Educational Procedure.
Time away – breaks “off” campus – get out and “smell” the aromas of those exampled Maple Leaves & Trees, clear the head, re-charge the batteries, and NOT to literally – DROWN your HEADS – in the Books.
Correct – I think this decision, by “whoever” to ABOLISH an Autumn break – in “places of learning” – in Hungary – massively WRONGFUL.
St. Dominic – famous quote:
“we must sow the seed – not hoard it.”
Do you think, your “Beloved” hero – Victor Orban, practices this theory on Education ?
REMEMBER – Education, it Opens Windows of Opportunities.
I write, that SUCCESSFUL Education, is a partnership between home, the school, place of Education, and the Government, that embraces, the NEED, to continuously INVEST into Education.
In an atmosphere of openness, candour, and Mutual Trust, that must never FAIL in the Respect, for each others position, this must be – Exist between all Partners.
The Partners being:
(1) – Students.
(2) – Parents.
(3) – Educators.
(4) – Government.
Orban has dismally FAILED, the longer he has been in office, to practice that DEMOCRACY is Dialogue.
Orban, as we are WITNESSING in Hungary, the ugliness, set in place over years, under his time in office, to destruct ABOLISH, in Hungary, the practice of dialogue, in accordance of CREEDS – that historically fall under the banner of Democracy.
Orban – “grows” with evidence, “splashed” out – in Hungary, in Europe and Globally, that aligns him, his place of personal satisfaction / comfort, inclusive of his LARGE ego, to govern, under “stringent” attention – that fall under, the ideology associated and practiced under a Dictatorship.
Orban, his Government, lost there way, with expanding, developing creating OPPORTUNITIES through Education, in Hungary, through non INVESTMENT.
Emeritus – Professor of Law, or from whatever “station in life” we come – in life, in the participation of our daily lives, family life, places of employment, we NEED space.
The “bloke” up-stairs, often, he would just DISAPPEAR, find time and space, in dividing himself, from the CORE of what he was about.
Listening to YOUR Body – vital.
REMEMBER – the “bloke” up-stairs – My Biggest Hero – he was a teacher and an EDUCATOR.
As Prof. Steiner previously stated, education has changed. Research is made easier. All one needs is a computer. Students presently are catered to. It is evident that student do not spend their time on critical thinking when away from the educational institution. Students still have X-mas break, Easter break, probably other off days. Removing fall break is hardly tantamount of slavery of students.
Yes, I think the world and Hungary is lucky to have Prime Minister Orban. I also commend the FIDESZ Christian Conservative Government. This government is on the right track, putting the welfare of Hungarians first.
