FM Szijjártó: cooperation between Slovakia, Hungary best so far

Péter Szijjártó, the minister of foreign affairs and trade, has been awarded the honarary citizenship of the city of Komárom, in northern Hungary, “in recognition of his work to enrich the material and intellectual treasures of the city and of his morally exemplary work in the interest of the Hungarian nation”, the ministry said on Saturday.
After receiving the honor from Mayor Attila Molnár, Szijjártó said Komárom had become “a main venue of the Hungarian economy’s success story in the past 15 years”.
Komárom has received 18 large new investments in the past decade worth a total of 524 billion forints (EUR 1.3bn), which have created some 4,000 jobs, he said.
Szijjártó said that the experiences gathered during his youth spent in the city had served “as a compass in difficult foreign policy decisions”.
“I still remember when the river [Danube] did not connect but divided countries, city parts, friendships and families,” Szijjártó said. “This has provided the foundation of the commitment for us … not to allow the world to be divided into blocs again.”

He welcomed that the cooperation between Slovakia and Hungary had become “the best so far, thanks to considerable effort and brave decisions.” “That creates the opportunity for Komárom to exist as one city on either side of the Danube,” he said.
